#SASHIKO160 mustard yellow sashiko coaster kit 'tombo' dragonflies
This kit, including pre printed coaster panels and backing fabric, six strand embroidery thread in six colours, a sashiko needle and instructions, makes five gorgeous sashiko coasters, perfect for a gift or just to keep for yourself! The fabric is the same Sarashi cloth used for the Olympus 'hanafukin' panel range, which is quite lightweight compared with other sashiko fabrics, but is very easy to stitch, super absorbent and wears well. 'Tombo' are associated with summer, but are pretty at any time of year. The instructions are in Japanese but mainly pictorial, so they are easy to follow. Just remember, measurements are all in centimetres, not inches.
I have the matching 'hanafukin' (which literally means 'flower cloth') which you can just see in the top of the first photo and in the second photo, also in mustard yellow (or indigo blue) with a larger dragonfly design which compiments the coaster. Each hanafukin panel is supplied in one piece with a plain area the same size attached, because they are designed to be stitched through both layers and the edges turned in to make a little cloth, but you can stitch the printed layer separately (as I often do). NB - these packs do not include the white hanafukin shown in the second photo.
If you are also buying the hanafukin panel and want to coordinate your threads with the coasters, you can either match each of the six strand embroidery threads to embroidery thread colours in your own stash once the kit arrives, or buy several 20m sashiko threads to stitch both the coaster kit and the hanafukin cloth. The embroidery threads in the coaster kits are light green (#1028), olive green (#274), light purple (#277), purple (#623), russet (#6655) and deep red (#755), so multicoloured 20m sashiko threads #51 or #77 and #73 or #75 would give a similar effect with just two threads, or stitch every line with multicolour #74. If you want to stitch with threads that are as close as possible (but not identical) to the six strand embroidery threads, these would be 20m sashiko threads shades #6 light green, #7 mid green, #24 purplish pink, #19 purple, #15 bright red or #03 mid brown or #04 persimmon orange (there is no true russet in the sashiko range) and #12 dark red.
For another colour combination idea, try stitching the indigo 'tombo' hanafukin with 20m sashiko thread #05 yellow ochre and stitch the coaster panels in #11 dark indigo blue, so the colours are reversed!
I'm stitching the hanafukin panel in the indigo version at the moment, using the sashiko threads doubled for the dragonfly bodies for a bolder effect (20m #77 dark green/light green/sea green/bright blue) , and singly for the dragonflies' wings (also in #77) and the background grid (#72 teal/turquoise/mid blue), so they look more delicate. These colours would also look lovely on the mustard yellow coasters and hanafukin. It will be bordered and backed with one of the Olympus striped cottons, and made into a cushion.
Finished size for each coaster is 10cm (4in approx) square.
Marks wash out. NB - the marks have less contrast than my pre printed sashiko panels.
