'The traditional Japanese chest of drawers covered with colourful chiyogami paper inspired these neat pockets – a handy way to store small items or maybe secrets! Add your favourite buttons as “drawer handles”.  The ideal project for a fat quarter of Japanese printed fabric, especially gold prints. Finished size 11 ½ in long x 13 ½ in wide. '
 
Skill level - just above beginner to intermediate.

You will need -
printed Japanese fabric 19½ x 22in (50 x 56 cm) approx.
plain cotton fabric 19½ x 22 in (50 x 46 cm) approx.
iron on interfacing 7 x 8 in (18 x 20 cm) & 5 x 14 in (13 x 35 cm) approx.
2oz or thin wadding (batting) 14 x 12 in
six buttons (for (drawer handles”)
sewing machine to assemble patchwork, with quarter inch footrotary cutter, quilters’ ruler and cutting mat
scissors
sewing cotton to match fabric
sewing needle
sewing pins & tacking (basting) thread (optional)
 
'Tansu means “chest” in Japanese.  There are many different shapes and sizes for storing various items.  Kaidan dansu staircase chests, choba dansu used by merchants and mizuya kitchen chests are some of the larger varieties, combining drawers and cupboards with sliding doors.   Smaller chests include haribako (sewing boxes) which have a special slot for a ruler and a pincushion drawer.  Making practical small cardboard chests covered with pretty chiyogami paper, often from kits, is still a popular hobby.  For our patchwork “tansu”, we have chosen fabrics with patterns like chiyogami.'
